Opening a Saved Document Choose File > Open from the drop-down menu in the upper left of Fireworks. Just as in any other Window program, you can select a directory or file folder from the drop-down menu. Exercise 1: Open a saved document For practice, try opening up C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Fireworks 3\Tutorial\Animated_Start.png You should see the following:

Opening a New Document Choose File > New from the drop-down menu. Fireworks will open a "New Document" menu screen.
From this screen you can select the height and width of your "workspace" and the resolution. A normal screen setting is 800 pixels by 600 pixels. So if you want to create an image that is one-quarter the size of the screen, you would make it 200 pixels wide and 150 pixels high. The resolution determines how "sharp" or precise the image is. A high resolution (72 or above) will yield a very clear image, whereas low resolution images will load onto the page more quickly, but may look fuzzy. Later in Fireworks, you'll learn how to reduce the size of image files. You can also select the canvas color -- that is, the color behind your image. Generally, it is good to select either a background that is the same color as your web-page, or to set the canvas as "transparent." In this way, your image background will blend into your web page. Exercise 2: Open a new document and establish the size, resolution and background canvas. Open a new document (File > New) and establish the following settings:
You should get the following:
