Lesson Six: Text

Inserting Text

To insert text, choose the text tool on the toolbar:

When you click your cursor in a document, the text editor window will pop-up

The text editor

The text editor allows you to set the:

  • font style -- in our example at the right, it's "Geneva"
  • text size in points -- "12"
  • text color
  • text style -- Bold, Italic, Underline
  • text "kerning" -- adjusts the spacing between letters
  • text "leading" -- adjusts the spacing between lines of text
  • text "baseline shift" -- raises or lowers the text above or below the baseline.
  • text "horizontal scale" -- makes the text narrower or wider
  • text alignment -- left, middle, right and vertical alignment
  • text direction -- forward or reverse
  • Anti-Aliasing -- this technique makes text look less jagged. Text that is displayed as part of web pages often needs to be softened around the edges.

To insert text, you simply type in the open field and then click "apply" and "OK."

To modify text formats, simply double-click on the text in a document, or highlight the text in a text-window.

  1. Open a new document
  2. Write your name using the following text settings:
  • font style: arial
  • text size: 20 pt
  • text color: red
  • text style: bold, italic

Click "apply" and "OK" -- you should get something similar to this:

Now, double-click your name to access the text editor. Make sure your text is highlighted in the text window and then try applying different formats to your text -- alignment, kerning, spacing, anti-aliasing. Notice how your text changes based on which tool you apply.
