Lesson Eight: Applying Effects

What Have We Learned Thus Far?

At this point you know how to ... (note, if you don't know how to do these things, click on the links to visit the relevant lesson):

Effects

Firework effects change the look of the inside or the outside of objects

The effects you will learn to apply include:

Bevel

Bevel effects simulate the look of three-dimensional objects

Shadow

Shadow effects cast a shadow from the object

Emboss

The emboss effect pulls the shape into or out from the background or another object. In this case, it looks like the rectangle has been pulled up from the background.

Glow

The glow effect adds a glow around your object.

Blur

The blur effect adds blurs and smudges the edges of an object -- in this case, the text "hello."

Sharpen

The sharpen effect focuses the detail on an object and sharpens the edges.

Find edges

The find edges effect locates the edges of an image. This effect is used when you want to convert a photo or other gradiant image into an outline illustration

Convert to alpha

The convert to alpha effect converts a color image into a grayscale image.

Adjust color

The adjust color effect allows you to:

  • modify brightness
  • modify contrast
  • change the levels of various color hues (make a photo more red, green or blue)
  • invert colors
  • apply other effects

In this example, the color hues have been changed and then the colors are inverted -- for example, orange becomes blue, black becomes white

Eye Candy

Eye Candy is a separate program. Fireworks offers you two free "eye candy" filters: cutout effect and motion trail (motion trail is shown to the right)
