Lesson Ten:
Shadow Effect

Shadow

To select the shadow effect, click on the drop down box by selecting the arrow next to "None." You will see a series of options:

Choose "shadow and glow" -- you will then have the option of choosing a drop shadow or inner shadow. A drop shadow sets the shadow off to the side of the document. An inner shadow cuts out a shadow along the inside of the object

Once you have selected drop shadow or inner shadow, you will have additional options:

  • Distance -- controls how far the shadow falls from the object; default is 7.
  • Color Well -- sets the color of the shadow; here the shadow is black.
  • Opacity -- changes the transparency of the shadow. The lower the number, the more transparent the object; default is 65%
  • Softness -- sets the softness/hardness of the shadow's edge -- default is 4
  • Lighting-- changes the angle of light cast by the shadow -- use this option to rotate the shadow around the object
  • Knock Out -- checking this box eliminates the object and leaves only the shadow.

Exercise

  1. Create a square with a blue fill
  2. Create an outer shadow
  3. Choose 10 for distance, black for shadow, 75% for opacity, 3 for softness and 125 degrees for lighting.
  4. Compare your shadow to sample 1 on the right -- does it look similar?
  5. Choose knock out
  6. Compare your bevel to sample 2 on the right -- does it look similar?

TIP: If you want to edit your effect, select your object (using the white arrow on the toolbar, if needed) and then click on the i in the blue dot on the effect menu
