Lesson Eleven:
Emboss Effect

Emboss

To select the emboss effect, click on the drop down box by selecting the arrow next to "None." You will see a series of options:

Choose "bevel and emboss" -- you will then have the option of choosing an inset emboss or raised emboss. An inset emboss appears to push the object into the background; a raised emboss appears to lift the object away from the background.

Once you have selected raised emboss or inset emboss, you will have additional options:

  • Width -- changes the width of the embossed edge; default is 2.
  • Contrast -- changes intensity of the contrast between emboss highlight and shadows; default is 75%.
  • Softness -- sets the softness/hardness of the edge of the emboss -- default is 2
  • Lighting-- changes the angle of light on the embossing -- use this option to rotate the emboss effect around the object

Exercise

  1. Create a square
  2. Create an inset emboss
  3. Choose 4 for width, 75% for contrast, 1 for softness and 125 degrees for lighting.
  4. Compare your emboss to sample 1 on the right -- does it look similar?

TIP: If you want to edit your effect, select your object (using the white arrow on the toolbar, if needed) and then click on the i in the blue dot on the effect menu
