Adjust Color Effects

To select the adjust color effect, click on the drop down box by selecting the arrow next to "None." You will see a series of options:

Choose adjust color. You will be presented with a wide variety of options:

  • Auto-Levels -- applies a preset adjustment
  • Brightness/Contrast -- makes the image lighter or darker
  • Curves -- adjusts the intensity of various colors along a diagonal axis.
  • Hue Saturation -- adjusts hue, saturation and lightness. Changes the intensity and purity of the color.
  • Invert -- shifts colors to their opposite -- for example, converts orange to blue.
  • Levels -- allows you to precisely set various color levels

For purpose of this exercise, we will focus on brightness/contrast, curves, hue saturation and invert.

Exercise

  1. Copy the image of Kevin Garnett into fireworks. You can do this by (1) right-clicking the image and choosing "copy" and then (2) pasting the image into fireworks -- make sure you have opened a new document so that you have a workspace in which to paste the image.
  2. Select the image.
  3. Choose adjust color > brightness/contrast
  4. Set brightness to 75
  5. Compare your image to sample 1 on the right -- does it look similar?
  6. Set contrast to 75
  7. Compare your image to sample 2 on the right -- does it look similar?
  8. Remove the effects, then select color > curves. You'll see an option box with a diagonal line. Select various points on the line and move them to create a wiggle.
  9. Compare your image to sample 3 -- it may look different, but you should see a similar type of effect.
  10. Remove the effects, then select color > invert. Compare your image to sample 4.
  11. Remove your effects, then select color > Hue/saturation.
  12. Select hue: 25; saturation 50; lightness: 20. Compare your result to sample 5.

TIP: If you want to edit your effect, select your object (using the white arrow on the toolbar, if needed) and then click on the i in the blue dot on the effect menu
