Current Volunteer Programs Include:
School Age Tutor
Monday–Thursday 4:00–5:30pm
Enthusiastic, dedicated individuals are needed to provide children (ages 6–12) weekly homework assistance and tutoring. As a School Age Tutor, you devote your expertise and guidance for one hour each week or more to help children improve academic skills and performance. An emphasis is placed on expanding knowledge by providing individual attention. The Center provides an orientation and on-site support.
School Age Learning Rotation
Minimum of 8 and Maximum of 20 Volunteers
Groups of 3 to 5 volunteers rotate between each school age classroom (children ages 5 to 12) facilitating learning enrichment activities for approximately 30 minutes in each classroom. Each learning rotation is designed around a particular theme that is developed with input from volunteers and school age curriculum. Rotations are often comprised of the following activities: interactive story construction, multicultural learning project, food experience, and art project. Examples of Learning Rotation activities include: poetry, sculpture, scrapbook making, and reader's theater.
Learning Specialist (STRONG)
Wednesdays 5:30–7:30pm
Dynamic volunteers impact the success of today’s teens by serving as Learning Specialists in the Youth Alternatives Program. With direction, you will mentor young males ages 10–18 in Project STRONG. Topics include helping to build confidence and knowledge by implementing skill-based projects and activities: academic tutoring, sports, fine arts, leadership development, financial and budgeting skills, and independent living skills. Your focus is preventive, keeping youth engaged in a variety of constructive pursuits in a positive environment. The Center provides an orientation and on-site support.
Learning Specialist (GROW)
Mondays 5:30–7:30pm
Extraordinary women are needed to make a brilliant impact as volunteer Learning Specialists for Project GROW, a personal development project that serves girls ages 10–18. With direction, you will mentor adolescent girls to increase development of a sense of self and recognition of individual talents and strengths for success in personal, social, academic, and career roles. Topics include social skills, independent living and financial skills, creative arts, and academic and career preparation skills. The Center provides an orientation and on-site support.
Teacher Aide (Early Childhood)
Monday–Friday 9:00am–12:00pm | 3:00–5:00pm
As a Teacher Aide, you assist teachers with implementing classroom activities with small groups of children ages 3 to 5. These include literacy activities, art projects, dramatic play, puzzles, educational computer games, and outdoor play. In addition, the Teacher Aide supports routine classroom activities (children’s clean up and children’s transitions — preparation for lunch and nap).
Early Childhood Learning Rotation
Monday–Friday 9:15am–12:00pm | 3:00–5:00pm | 12–20 Volunteers
Groups of two to four volunteers rotate between each early childhood education classroom facilitating enrichment activities for approximately fifteen minutes in each classroom. Each rotation is designed around a particular theme that is developed with input from volunteers. Each rotation is comprised of the following activities: interactive reading of book, interactive song, learning game, active game, food experience, and art project.
In Addition to the Above Projects
One-time basis
We have several one-time volunteer needs, such as painting, landscaping, and other facility upkeep. We also welcome the opportunity to work with you to develop workshops for children, youth, or parents in the area of your interest. Previous volunteer-led workshops have included photography, creative writing, basic budgeting, computers, and music.
